Veneers are one of the least invasive options to truly enhance the beauty of your smile and provide effective long-lasting results. They look very natural and are a perfect option for anything from a minor adjustment to a major change. Whether you want to alter the shape, colour, position or length of your teeth, porcelain veneers can give you the perfect smile you’ve always dreamed of.
Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells that fit over your natural teeth. They won’t age or stain like bonding, and maintain colour stability over time. Your dentist carefully matches them to your existing teeth and ensures they complement your facial features. After they are bonded in your mouth, your smile will be revitalized and will look completely natural. Veneers can also be fabricated out of a durable composite resin, however, porcelain veneers offer a few advantages over resin veneers.
Porcelain veneers are stronger than their resin counterparts and they have the added advantage of not staining and remaining as white as they are when put in. These qualities make porcelain veneers more durable and long-lasting, but they also take more effort to install. A composite veneer usually takes one appointment while porcelain veneers take at least two visits.
Porcelain veneers are custom made by the laboratory to match your particular dental structure and are therefore remarkably hard to differentiate from real teeth. Unless you tell people you have them, most people will assume they are your natural teeth.
When getting porcelain veneers, you and your dentist may choose to use some local anesthetic around the region where the veneers will be placed. A thin layer of enamel is removed from the surface of your teeth to make room for the porcelain veneer. Freezing your mouth will alleviate any discomfort this may cause.
Once the enamel has been removed your dentist will digitally scan your teeth and send these images to the lab. This scan will be used to create veneers that custom fit your teeth.
While you are waiting, temporary veneers are placed to protect your teeth until the porcelain veneers are ready. These temporary veneers are fragile, requiring care and attention when eating or brushing your teeth, otherwise they can come loose. They also serve as “a trial run” to make sure you will be thrilled with your new smile.
